Older Croatian historiographers approached the Middle Ages onesidedly without any regard for wider European context or the fact that basic processes and events might coincide. Larger extent researches were almost exclusively proposed by foreign scholars who only sporadically used results of Croatian medievalists, so that Croatian medieval period remained unknown, less interesting and out of reach to foreign scholars. Nevertheless, Medieval Croatia certainly followed trends, processes and events – in the most obvious way it is true for its ecclesiastical and cultural history. Considering the amount and its preciousness, cultural heritage in our country has been studied by proportionately too small a number of scholars. Coordinator and project members focused their researches on various aspects of ecclesiastical history, so the project is a natural continuation of their studies. Written sources for medieval ecclesiastical and cultural history of Croatia, kept in local and foreign archives and libraries, are still out of reach of Croatian and foreign scholars because, first of all, they have not been published so the main goal will be to identify, study and publish them; studies of less known but certainly splendid and very attractive aspects of cultural, social and political life of the period when cultural and public activities were mainly related to ecclesiastical persons and institutions will follow in order to call attention of European scholars on the Croatian medieval themes. The following themes, the study of which will bring to concrete results (books, published sources, articles, congress participations, MA and PhD theses) are proposed: 1. Vatican Secret Archives and Apostolic Library sources. 2. Chapter Archives of Trogir. 3. Artistic and documentary holdings in the churches and monasteries. 4. Onomastic researches on latin medieval documents. 5. Papal legates in Croatia (12-15 c.). 6. Benedictine Order in Dalmatian towns. 7. Medieval sacral architectural heritage. 8. Croatian clergy between Rome and Venice: 12-16.c. The approach will be interdisciplinary – researchers are well-known experts in paleography, diplomatics, canon law, history of architecture and art, archaeology, linguistics. Their results will open new strands of research and will be useful on international level confirming the degree of integration of Croatia in the European ecclesiastical and cultural movements, with special regard on the history of medieval Papacy.
