The main purpose of the project is to research the causes of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and events and causes that led to the creation of Croatia as an independent state. Project will also research Croatian war for independence and all events connected with it. The research will be based mainly on the methods of historical science. Results of the project should give a better knowledge about Croatian contemporary history. Taking into consideration the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the rulling communist system, causes and course of the Croatian struggle for independence and great number of war victims in Croatia, the results of this projects will be invaluable. Our basic hypothesis is that the main cause for the disintegration of Yugoslavia were weaknesses of the rulling communist system and unresolved national issue. Croatian struggle against communism and unitary political system, aspiration for independence and integration into the union of the democratic European countries led to the creation of Croatia as an independent and democratic state. As a result of Greater Serbian ideology Croatia was a victim of the aggression of the Yugoslav army, Serbia, Montenegro and part of Serb minority in Croatia. The Project will concentrate on the historical events that took place in the 1990-ies, but research will also try to explain causes which led Croatia and Croats to abondon the Yugoslav state and communist system.
