Dear reader,
The second issue of the Croatian Institute of History Newsletter brings you an update about our activities during the last four months.
Although we spent some time on summer vacations, we as the biggest public research institute in the field of humanities in Croatia have to justify our position. Thus, our researchers continued work in accordance with our Strategic plan 2013-2018, and this second issue of our Newsletter brings you information about our activities during the summer and early fall.
Events and News
First meeting of our International council – At the end of July 2014 we held the first meeting of the International council of our Institute. Members of the Council – dr. Ulf Brunbauer (IOS, Regensburg), dr. Balas Trencseny (CEU, Budapest) and dr. Donal Cooper (Jesus College, Cambridge) – reviewed present work of our Institute and gave some useful suggestions regarding improvement of our international collaboration.
HRZZ Projects – On the recently closed tender for competitive research projects organized by Croatian scientific foundation our researchers applied with three projects proposals: Cities of Croatian Middle Ages: urban space and urban society (URBES), Military life and images of warriors in the Croatian borderline from the 16th c. up to 1918 and From virgin forests to arable land: history of anthropization of forests in Slavonia from the Middle Ages up to the beginning of the 20th century. Keep fingers crossed for us!!!
Research grants – On the recently closed tender for “Research grants for professional development of yourng researchers and postdoctorals” our researchers applied with two project proposals: Social and cultural stratigraphy of medieval Slavonia – example of Greben manor and POVIK: Support for strengthening innovative and entrepreneurial capacities of young historians.
HC in Scopus – We are happy to announce that from 2014 our journal that covers topics from older history Historical contributions is indexed in online bibliographical database Scopus. Therefore, now both of our oldest journals are indexed in this prestigious database.
Conferences
1914: The first year of War – 14th -17th Oct 2014 Institute, in cooperation with Matica hrvatska, Austrian cultural forum and Institute Balassi – Hungarian institute in Zagreb, has organized a huge international congress, with participation of more than 50 scholars. The congress was organized under the auspices of the president of the Republic of Croatia. The entire video recording of the congress’ work is available at our YouTube Channel. Along with the congress, with the help of Austrian cultural forum and pupils of 18th gymnasium, we organized an exhibition “World War One – Traces in my neighborhood”
Franz Vaniček – 23rd-24th Oct 2014 in cooperation with Public Library in Slavonski Brod, our Department in Slavonski Brod has organized scientific conference “Franz Vaniček and historiography about Military Border”. On this conference 25 researchers have presented their papers.

Segregation and Integration of Hospitals – 10th-11th Apr 2015 in cooperation with International Network for the History of Hospitals and Oxford Brookes University we organize in Dubrovnik an international conference under title “Segregation and Integration in the history of the Hospital”
